During the certification exam or job interview, you won’t have time to draw up a chart to solve subnetting problems, and if you don't really understand subnetting, you will have no way of knowing if your chart works. I once saw a CCNA instructor who tried to teach subnetting to the class using a chart. He tried to use it to solve a couple of subnetting problems. By the time he was done, the chart was a confusing unreadable mess of scribbles, lines, arrows and tick marks. He tried another subnetting problem, and the chart became useless and he got the answer wrong. And you know what else? That chart was only good to solve Class C subnetting problems. I soon realized that a chart was not a practical way to solve subnetting problems.

8. But are not there some situations where a chart can help?

Because IT exams can be an excruciating challenge, some people should write up a small simple chart to give some psychological comfort. So you will feel that, even if your mind blanks out, you will at least have something back to fall on. This is what I did on my first certification exam. But I was too nervous to even use or read my chart. When I got to the subnetting problems, solving them was instinctual, and I will teach you this instinct in my E-book. Make no mistake, once you read The Subnet Training Guide, you will never look at a chart or pick up that pencil during the certification exam. You will regard charts as a joke and a waste of time.

9. Don't I need to learn some math tricks and formulas to solve subnetting problems?
